I’m not generally big on making resolutions. However, I think that this year I will be adopting a theme for the year. Starting new projects is exciting and I like it. The finishing part though…um well…that doesn’t happen nearly enough. So my theme for 2012 is finishing.

Here are some things I hope to finish in 2012:

The quilt for my oldest niece I started probably 4 years ago (it just needs binding!)

The bedroom remodel (we just need baseboards and two Ikea Pax wardrobes!)

A redesign of this site (suggestions needed! what would make it easier to find carry bag info? what is missing?)

Oodles of bags and all of the other items needed for my BlytheCon 2012 booth

My passport application for our cruise in June!

Several books!

Cleaning the garage

My Beekeeper’s Quilt 366 Photo Project

My great-neice’s afghan (seriously…there are like 12 more rows to go!)

My gray Vitamin D cardigan

What do you have left unfinished? Why is it not finished? Have you pictured what it will be like when it is done? What is the very next action you could take to carry that along to get it towards that vision of ‘doneness’?

So I’ve been trying to keep up with my GTD and a little while back started using SpringPad to do it. GTD is always much more about the process and the habit rather than what ‘tool’ you are using. Here is a little though on how I am using SpringPad currently for my GTD workflow.

Inbox: Things I collect that need to be processed go into the Inbox notebook. Since I can use SpringPad from my Nook, iPhone, and any computer this takes care of most things. My other inboxes are my email (work and personal), and where I need to improve…physical inboxes at work and at home. There really isn’t a lot that I need to put in a physical inbox at work but I like to doodle and actually write with a pen or pencil (gasp!) so there are notes that I will toss in there and process by the end of the day.

Next Actions: These are usually tasks. I use a tag for the context (@home, @work, @errand, etc) and they are in my Next Actions notebook. If they are tied to an area of focus or larger project then they will be in that notebook too. This was I can see all of my NA’s and sort by tag to see what I can get done in my current context. Likewise, I can look at a project come review time and see what needs to be done, what is done, etc.

Small Projects: These I have been using checklists. The project has a name and at the end of the name is the current Next Action for the project. The context can change by changing the tag and the notebook(s) the checklist is in. At the point where I am waiting on someone else? I put that in the name and take it out of the Next Action notebook and in to the Waiting For notebook. Bounces back to me? Change it up again.

Larger Projects & Areas of Focus: These have their own notebooks. Project ones start with “prj:” so I can spot them easily. Next Actions go in there, bookmarks, notes, etc.

As an example, for custom Blythe Dolly Carry Bag orders I create a checklist. I actually use the template method of exporting a shell list to your email and springing it to make a new copy. The mini project is named after the month\year and the customer and the rest of the name is the current NA (gather requirements, insert zipper, take photos, ship, etc.). Then check list off I go through what needs to be done. The tag on the list can change depending on the NA. So @home for most of it then @errand when I need to go ship. All of these are in the SewPixie notebook in SpringPad. I also attach notes to the checklists with details on what we’ve decided for the custom bag, links to fabric, etc.

I finally finished the cardigan with mixed results. I did two pockets, one large, and one small that turned out okay but it certainly a skill that could be improved on future projects. No really great photos yet, need to get S or someone to take some. Now that it is getting cooler out there should be plenty of chances to wear it. The yarn does seem to pill though so that is less that pleasing.

Impulse buy last night was a Nook Color. I have actually been thinking of getting one for a while but took the plunge last night while S and I were buying a video game. So far I really like it. One challenge I had with my old Nook (original 3G + WiFi) was that I couldn’t zoom in on my PDF files. I use them quite a lot for knitting (and for gaming now) so on some patterns I really just couldn’t read it. The eInk was amazing though so I still liked the old device. With the new one there are many apps and I downloaded a few free ones to start. Since I am working hard on getting on track with GTD I am finding the Conqu application amazing. I can put a context with a task, and put it with a project if I want. You also have the option to say how much energy a task will take and how long it will probably take (quick, medium, etc). It is only day one of using it but so far so good. The main contexts I use are @work (includes computer work I need to do since it is rare I need to actually be at the office), @home, @computer, @errand. At first I did what it seems many do and made far too many contexts…even down to @ironingboard!

That will require firing up the old MacMini as I am pretty sure all my source files for my logo are on there. So with luck I will have that all sorted out soon.

Not much to update in terms of the house remodeling. The bedroom still needs painting and the floors put down. I cannot wait! We did do some thrifting on Sunday and founds lots of cool things.
